J. Wilkins Opportunity School
Quality Education and Encouragement for Student Success
At J. Wilkins Opportunity School, part of Griffith Centers, we are committed to providing each student with a quality education that is engaging, meaningful, and tailored to meet individual educational goals. We understand that many young people who have experienced trauma face unique challenges in their learning journey—whether due to school moves, lost credits, difficult environments, or personal struggles. Our school offers a supportive, alternative educational setting designed to help students overcome these obstacles and get back on track toward success.
Our Commitment to Every Student
Personalized Learning and Therapeutic Support
We specialize in serving students in grades 3 through 12 who have Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or 504 plans, offering a therapeutic, alternative educational experience for those whose needs are not met in traditional settings. Our small class sizes and responsive student-to-staff ratio ensure every student receives the individual attention necessary to thrive.
Our team designs individualized school programs, supported by academic and behavioral assessments, to help students succeed academically and emotionally. We integrate tools like i-Ready to effectively assess and monitor progress, allowing us to meet students exactly where they are.
Day Treatment Program
A Flexible Alternative for Students Needing Less Structure
Our Day Treatment Program provides specialized education for students who benefit from lower levels of structure outside school hours compared to residential programs. This program supports students dealing with emotional, family, and related challenges by combining quality academics with therapeutic interventions.

Innovative Learning Opportunities
Curriculum-Based Community Activities (C.B.C.A.)
We bring learning to life by connecting classroom lessons with the community. Students explore local history, cultural heritage, environmental science, and volunteer opportunities—turning the community into a dynamic classroom that enhances engagement and practical skills.
Experiential Education
Through adventure and challenge-based learning, students face fears, solve real-world problems, and reflect on their experiences to build resilience, self-confidence, and broader life skills.
Alternative Cooperative Education (A.C.E.) Career & Technical Education
Our ACE CTE program prepares students for the workforce by teaching technical and career skills aligned with high-demand industries. This individualized pathway supports all students, including those with special needs, helping them develop competencies for postsecondary success and self-sufficiency.
Culinary Arts Program
Our Griffith’s Kitchen Culinary Arts program fosters creativity, patience, and life skills through hands-on cooking lessons. Students learn practical kitchen skills while expressing themselves and building confidence.
The Power of Partnership
“An excellent education is not possible without the strong partnership of students, parents, and staff. We encourage these positive collaborations so that we can continue to give our children an opportunity to become self-motivated learners and productive citizens.”
— William Sanders, Clinical Residential Director
